Are you ready for more light table activities? We did some fine motor work recently by weaving with straws on our light table as part of our monthly series with some of my favorite blogging friends!
This month’s Light & Reflections Series theme was “Motor Skills” so we focused on fine motor skills with our light table.
Weaving with Straws on the Light Table

Materials Needed:
- Craft Sticks or Popsicle Sticks
- String
- Glue
- Straws
- Light Table
To make the weaving loom I just glued together (I used a hot glue gun) four craft sticks in a square then wrapped a piece of string back and forth in creating even rows, securing each end with a bit of glue to keep the string from coming undone.
It took me less than 5 minutes to make the craft stick loom and when it was done I dropped it on the light table with some straws and it was ready to go! I like to put this out as everyone starts to rise from nap because it’s a great quiet time activity and keeps the kids engrossed for quite some time.
The girls weaved the straws through the string in random orders at first but after they got the hang of it they started making different patterns and redoing their patterns over and over. In addition to working those fine motor skills and doing some pattern making we also got some counting practice by counting how many straws they could weave each time.
