Looking for winter activities for the light table? Try this arctic animals small world activity today!
Our Light and Reflections series is focusing on winter related activities this week and we have lots of fun activities for you to try. This theme is perfect for us because my daughter and daycare kids have been very interested in arctic animals after learning about reindeer from Christmas books so I decided to expand on that and make this simple small world activity for our light table.

Arctic Animals Small World Play
Materials:
- Ice
- Water
- Liquid Watercolor
- Safari TOOB Arctic Animals
- Mirror (ours is from the Dollar Tree, candle section)
I crushed a bunch of ice in a plastic bag until I remembered my blender has ice crush option. Then I tossed the ice in the blender and we had crushed ice! If you have real snow, which we rarely get, you could save yourself the time and grab some from outside!
We used the mini mirror as a frozen lake and in the small container I added a few drops of blue liquid watercolor to some ice water and presto we had an ocean!
Our Safari TOOB Arctic Animals has several items in it but we just starting our on are arctic animals unit so we are focusing on just the ones pictured right now (Harp Seal, Husky, Caribou, Walrus, Arctic Fox, Beluga Whale, & Polar Bear) and will add more to our animals small world as we learn about them.
Our polar bear was busy harassing all the other animals and stirring up trouble. My daughter loves polar bears and she LOVED playing with this small world activity. She played with it until nearly all the ice had melted, making up stories about the animals and building in the snow.
The polar bear took a break from being a predator and spent some time “ice skating with his friends” on the frozen lake before returning to his natural instincts.
Rawr! Doesn’t it look fun?! My kids love it!

Thanks! It worked way better than pounding on it with a potato masher! 😉
