Do you spend a lot of time outside in the summer? We live in predominantly rainy climate but thankfully we get a good two months (three if we’re really lucky) of warm summer sun. When the sun comes out we spend as much time outside as possible which means all our inside activities go outside, including our art station.
Outdoor Art Station for Kids
My daughter loves art activities. In our playroom she and the daycare kids have access to art supplies at all times and it’s one of her favorite areas so I wanted a way to for her to still have access to it when we were outside.
The only space we had open was in the corner of our playground between our outdoor sensory bin and shed. It was just enough space for another table but I wasn’t sure how to have space for the art supplies too. Thankfully I found the perfect solutions, Command™ Picture Hanging Strips and Mini Hooks that were a space saving way to add the art supplies. Plus when our rainy season starts again I can simply pull them off. They remove cleanly with no damage or long terms hardware left in my shed.
If you want yours up long term try using the Scotch® Brand mounting tape or mounting squares.
Materials Used:
- Command™ Picture Hanging Strips
- Command™ Mini Clear Hooks
- Metal Buckets ($1/ea)
- Small shelf
- Art Materials
I re-purposed an old IKEA shelf (I think it’s sold as a spice rack, we used it as a bookshelf before this) and some metal small buckets to hold the art supplies. I used the picture hanging strips to adhere the shelf to the wooden shed and the mini hooks I used to hold the buckets of supplies.
Once I got everything positioned I added the art supplies. The picture hanging strips are designed for heavy pictures so they hold the of weight of the shelf with supplies and the hooks were perfect for the buckets.
Below the hanging supplies I added an old coffee table and a roll of paper, turning it into a simple outdoor art station! My daughter couldn’t wait to get started!
Taking your art station outdoors also allows the kids to explore with natural materials and incorporate them into their art projects. My daughter added leaves and flower petals from around the yard to her masterpiece.
It’s the perfect summer art center!
