This homemade puffy paint recipe is easy to pull together, it uses three simple ingredients that are typical to any kitchen (even my very lacking kitchen), and is always a hit with the kids. You can find our microwave puff paint version here for a fun art and science activity all rolled in one!
Ingredients:
1 Cup Salt
1 Cup Flour
Water (I used a bit over 1 Cup)
Mix flour and salt together, add water until you achieve a consistency that isn’t too thick that it clogs the squeeze bottle. Also I’ve found that you don’t want it excessively runny or the water seeps into the paper and it takes much longer to dry and leaves a “ring” around the puffy paint.
Drying takes a bit if time, the ones that had piles of paint on them (pink one) honestly took about two days to dry but it hasn’t been warm/sunny weather here so I’m assuming in a warmer climate you could put them outside and they’d dry much faster.
Our masterpieces when they dried (well the pink one is still drying 2.5 days later):
When it dries it does get a bit brittle, but the color and puffiness stays!

I love these! Any idea how much water you used? (I'm pretty sure I'll mess it up if I go into it blindly, lol!)
Where Imagination Grows says
I used about a cup of water to get it runny enough to not clog my squeeze bottles 🙂

Hi! Will it last in the bottles? Or will it lose it’s consistency even if you stir it up again?
Where Imagination Grows says
Hi Lindsay! The longest I’ve stored mine is about 2.5 months but I did notice that it kept best when stored in the fridge. The first time I left it in our paint storage cabinet and when we used it again the consistency was a bit runnier. The next time I put the containers in the fridge and when we pulled it out to use again it was fine, the water separates a bit but I just squeezed out the excess and shook the bottle really well and it worked great! 🙂
