Lindsay Ward is an author that we already love so we were excited to find out she had a new book arriving on December 10th. My daughter and daycare kids love her other books, the Dexter T. Rexter series is a favorite in my house. Her books are colorful and bold, with fun stories that children can really connect with.
This new book about colors and color theory is another winner that your kids will love!

Gray just wants to be included. But the other colors are always leaving him out. So he decides to create his own project: an all-gray book. Once upon a time, there lived a wolf, a kitten, and a hippo…
Gray just knows it’s going to be perfect. But as he adds page after page, the Primary and Secondary colors show up…and they aren’t quite so complimentary.
A book within a book, this colorful tale explores the ideas of fitting in, appreciating others, and looking at things from another perspective and also uses personality and wit to introduce basic color concepts.
Oh, poor little gray! Often overlooked and left out, Gray has decided to make a book that is all gray. No other colors will be in this book. Gray will make a story that shows how great gray can be. But soon all the other colors begin to pop in and get involved in his story. Gray has to stand up for himself and make the other colors see how great gray is by itself!
This book is adorable! I love the little characters and all their personalities. Each color has its own personality and style. Gray was our favorite. He stands up for himself and shows all the other colors how great gray can be!
The story is silly and fun but also has a deeper theme of respecting differences and inclusion. My preschoolers laughed as we read this story but they also talked about how it hurt Gray’s feelings to always be left out. It allowed us to talk about how it feels when we aren’t included in someone else’s activity. The kids discussed how they felt when they are left out and what they can do to make sure they didn’t leave their friends out.
The story also shows that everyone is special in their own way. Gray may seem bleak to the other colors at first but soon they all see how important gray really is. Just like all the other colors, gray is unique and special!
I love that this book also contains many vocabulary words for children to learn. Kids will learn terms like hue, primary, secondary, monochromatic, and more. I was impressed with how much my kids learned from reading this. They could pick up and understand the meaning of these new words from the way they are presented in the story. It’s well done and easy for kids to follow.
In addition to color theory words, there are many other new words for kids to discover. We learned what dismal, bleak, muted, organic, and gloomy mean. It was fun to learn new words together while reading this colorful book.
This book works perfectly for color-themed lesson plans and is a great teaching tool. It’s funny and whimsical, a delight to read! I highly recommend that you add this great book to your library.
