It’s a great book about animals and what happens to all that poo in the zoo! We’ve been to the zoo dozens of times and I vaguely remember my daughter asking about the poop before but honestly I’ve never given much thought to waste disposal at a zoo. However, now I can say I do know what happens to all that poo!

Find out what happens to all that poo at the zoo in this funny & factual picture book!
There are so many different kinds of animals at the zoo, and they each make lots and lots (and sometimes LOTS!) of poo. So what do zoos do with all of that poo? This zany, fact-filled romp explores zoo poo, from cube-shaped wombat poo to white hyena scat, and all of the places it ends up, including in science labs and elephant-poo paper—even backyard gardens!
While the book is obviously about poop, there really is a lot of learning to be had. It’s not just a simple or basic book about poop. There’s no poop jokes or inappropriate humor either. It’s a truly educational take on a subject that is part of life. Everyone poops! And come on, we all know kids LOVE talking about poop anyway.
I really like the fact that there are two sets of text on each page. One set is large and easy to understand and can easily be read by even beginning readers themselves. Then on the bottom there is another set of text that provides more in depth facts about the animal’s behaviors or how the poop is used. The combination of these two text styles means that this book will keep kids engaged and makes it perfect for households with different age groups.
The illustrations are bright and cheery. For being a book about poop there is a lot of vibrant colors and whimsical illustrations. My kids loved all the pictures of the animals and of course the poop. Ha!
We all really learned a lot of new things from this book! I was surprised by how much we learned actually.
Did you know giraffes have four stomachs? That paper is made from elephant poo? How about that scientists are experimenting with zoo poo to power buildings and cars? Or that you can buy compost form some zoos? I didn’t know that either! And that is only a small portion of all the fun facts you and your kids can learn from this book.
After we read this book we took the learning into our community. We visited our local zoo and found out facts about how our zoo uses the animal waste and how that helps our community. Our zoo (Oregon Zoo) is starting a new program where they will give out “zoo doo” fertilizer for free and that keeps about 1,350 cubic yards of waste out of landfills! Pretty cool!
