Counting Crows is an engaging book that gets kids counting with simple rhyming text.
I like that this story is more than just a simple one, two… ten and you’re done book. I find that many counting books tend to be quick and overly simple which my preschoolers get bored with quickly, they don’t often want to reread those types of counting books. This one is not like that, we’ve read it several times over and the girls enjoy it each time.
In addition to counting the crows as you read along there are also all kinds of things the crows come across that the kids can count too, from peanuts to roly poly bugs and much more. The kids enjoyed this part of the story, it made it more interactive and engaging for them.
“Six Salty Peanuts! I can find them! One, two…”
The illustrator, Rob Dunlavey, did an amazing job creating whimsical and eye catching designs. The girls and I really liked the striking contrast between the colors. The combination of the black, red, and gray really made the images pop off the page and draw the children’s attention.
If you’re looking to extend the learning there is also a fun activity kit that you can download and print out. It uses this creative story to help kids develop counting, number recognition, and even critical thinking skills. It’s a great way to connect reading with further learning.
