Playdough is one of our favorite sensory materials to use on a daily basis. There are so many different ways to play and create with it that it never gets old, it’s a timeless kids activity! We’ve made peppermint, apple pie, and pumpkin scented playdough but this scented playdough recipe came about after a week of nasty colds and sick days. Whenever MB is sick we use Eucalyptus and spearmint essential oils in the bath and that’s when this playdough recipe hit me!
Eucalyptus & Spearmint Scented Playdough Recipe

I prefer this cooked playdough recipe because it lasts quite a long time (up to 6 months) and it doesn’t stick to or dry out hands like a lot of the ones that require more salt. We’re a family of sensitive skin so I’m careful when it comes to aggravating sensitive skin.
Don’t be scared off by the cooking process, it only takes a matter of minutes and is well worth it to have playdough that lasts!
- 1 cup flour
- ¼ cup salt
- ½ Tbsp. vegetable oil
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp. cream of tartar
- Eucalyptus Essential Oil (5-10 drops depending on level of scent you want)
- Spearmint Essential Oil (5-10 drops depending on level of scent you want)
- Green food coloring (optional)
- In a large pot, combine all dry ingredients and mix
- Add in vegetable oil, food coloring, and water, stir (I add the food coloring to the water prior to mixing it into the dry ingredients)
- Cook over medium heat until the dough pulls away from pot and starts to become dry.
- Remove from heat, let cool, and knead (if dough feels too sticky, knead in a Tbsp of flour until it’s no longer sticky)
With the multiple age groups that I have sometimes it’s hard to find day to day activities that work for all ages. Playdough however is great for all ages. My older kids make all sorts of creations, from flowers to monsters to castles, while my younger toddlers are just completely content to squish and poke it.
Playdough is a staple here for more than just the fun the kids get from it. The kids use it for imaginative play, creating art, storytelling, fine motor development, science exploration, sensory learning… and so much more. Playdough is a versatile material that has so many learning opportunities and it’s FUN!
