With winter in full swing here but no snow in sight for us we’ve been busy learning about places that have lots of snow like the arctic. We recently learned about arctic animals through small world play and the girls loved it so much we’ve been doing more and more activities to learn about life in the arctic. My daughter really wanted to make an igloo craft so we started with that and ended with this arctic life small world activity!
Igloo Craft & Arctic Small World on the Light Table

Materials for Igloo Craft
- Clear Plastic Cups
- Scissors
- Mod Podge (or glue)
- White Tissue Paper
These were simple to make! All I did was cut an arch shape out of the the side of each cup to create a doorway and the kids handled the rest. One of the girls wanted a small igloo so I cut about half an inch off the bottom to make them smaller.
The girls covered them with mod podge and stuck rectangles we cut from tissue paper onto them for the blocks of ice. After they dried we put them on the light table with the Eskimos from our Arctic TOOB and it evolved into a small world activity!
Arctic Life Small World Play Materials:
I reused the plastic pellets from our letter recognition sensory bin in a clear tray then added a few arctic figurines and our igloo craft to the light table and presto! Our own little arctic playground on the light table!
My daughter is obsessed with small world activities right now and I love it! Small world activities combine imaginative play with hands-on learning plus sometimes, like this one, crafts! It’s also a fun way to to bring books to life and let kids explore things in the world around them!
I didn’t get as many pictures of her playing with this because I wanted to play too! Later she played independently with this for over an hour!
Now for more activities as part of this series…
