Ready to go on a letter hunt? My daughter and the daycare girls are at an age where they are really interested in learning letters and simple ABC learning activities. As a result, I’ve been trying to find easy ways to encourage them to explore their letters. Activities that are ways for me to throw together but also entertaining for them.
What’s easier than grabbing some newspaper from your recycling?

Recycled Newspaper Letter Hunt for Kids
I love to break this easy letter hunt activity at when I need to have my group of daycare kids at the tables for a little while. It’s a perfect table time activity that your kids will have a blast doing!
Materials:
- Newspaper
- Magnifying Glass
- Marker or Highlighter
This took virtually no prep. Just set out some pieces of newspaper, a magnifying glass, and a marker or highlighter. I gave each kid a different letter to find by cutting a piece of paper into fourths and then writing a letter we have been focusing on learning on the square of paper. The kids would swap letter cards or newspapers after awhile. It changed things up and kept them sitting at the table longer but trying different letters in their letter hunt.
It may be a very simple activity but there are several things that your child is learning with this one activity in addition to learning letters. It’s a great visual scanning activity and it helps preschoolers with pre-writing practice and fine motor skills too. So much in one no-prep activity!
The girls really like this activity and it kept them focused for a good amount of time. They love using the magnifying glasses in general but having an activity based around them was extra fun. They said they were “letter detectives” searching for “letter clues” in the paper.
You can adapt this letter hunt into more advanced learning for older kids too. Turn it into a sight words search, use it to practice number recognition, or even find pictures.
So much concentration! I love doing this easy letter hunt with my preschoolers. They have so much fun, they love being “ABC detectives!”
