I’m a huge fan of Asia’s blog and when I was asked to be part of her book launch and review her new book I was so excited! Her blog, FunAtHomeWithKids.com, is and amazing resource full of fun activities for kids that I visit often. I had high expectations for 150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids and let me tell you the actual book blew my expectations right out of the water! The photos are amazing (Asia took them herself!) and the activities are bursting with hours of fun for infants, toddlers, & older children!
The book is divided into several sections that are packed with recipes for play.
- Slimes
- Doughs
- Paint
- Small Worlds
- Simple Sensory Activities
- Do-It-Yourself Toys
Not only do each of these sections have loads of fun activities for kids to try but it also offers variations of the recipes which add new ways to play and gives you ideas on how to extend the activity too. This means that you can do the same recipe over and over in different ways, giving your kids a variety of experiences to explore without having to buy tons of different supplies all the time. Plus the other amazing thing about 150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids is that the majority of the activities use items you may already have on hand in the kitchen!
The first activity we tried out was the Two-Ingredient Slime featured in her book! We used one of the four simple variations she suggested and made it sparkle! The girls loved it! Because we love our light table so much we played with ours on the light table with some loose parts! It was easy to make and the kids were off playing with it for quite some time!
Fun right?! And this is just ONE of the 150+ activities! We also tried out the Baked Cotton Balls and Magic Expanding Paint!! My daughter is super excited to give the Melting Ice Cream Dough and the Glowing Miniature Water Beads a try next!
Another one of my favorite parts of this book is the age and allergy labeling. Each activity is clearly labeled for appropriate ages and labeled for possible allergies.
There are several of these allergen free recipes in the book:
- Nut Free
- Gluten Free
- Dairy Free
- Dye Free
- Corn Free
- and more…
In addition to allergen free activities there are taste safe and all natural dye recipes.
We live in an era of ebooks and Google image searches but I believe that having actual paperback copies of activity books like 150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids are essential to any library when you have kids. Having an actual book allows the kids the freedom to browse and choose what they want to do rather than me browsing the internet or coming up with something on my own for them. My kids love to pull this book out and pick what they want to do or even just to check out the photos. It’s also a great resource to have on hand for anytime use or to share with other teachers if you work in a classroom.
Overall this book is well constructed, beautifully photographed, and most importantly full of amazing activities that will provide hours of fun and learning for your kids! I highly recommend this book to any parent or educator!
