Shaving Cream Painting!

What’s more fun than getting all messy? Not much to a child!

Recently we broke out the shaving cream (a standard favorite around my house) and did a little outdoor painting. I set everything up while the kids were napping so that when they awoke they could head outside and start playing. I know generally a lot of child care providers offer a snack as children wake up but the group of children I have now are never hungry until about an hour or so after nap so we get up, play outside or do a project then have snack.

This is what I set up outside: shaving cream, finger paint (3 colors), and different items to paint with. It was a particularly wind day so that’s why I have rocks on the shower curtain liner (these are great and available at Dollar Tree)

I didn’t get a picture of it until the kids starting painting but I also hung a large piece for paper (from our art easel butcher paper roll) on the bushes outside using clothes pins. I’ve also used tape/tacks and hung it from the fence in the past.

The kids had fun experimenting with the different brushes and mixing the colors up but fairly quickly it became more fun to paint themselves and then use their painted hands to finger paint onto the pictures. I used this opportunity to help them learn about color mixing and also textures.

This activity was a hit, but in this house anything with shaving cream usually is!
