We’ve been reading all about stars, astronauts and space for this month’s Poppins Book Nook (a virtual book club joining books with learning) because this month our book club theme was “Beyond Our Planet.” The kids picked out a fun book about stars and we made some star slime to go along with our book! The girls loved the pirate slime we recently made as part of this book club but the star slime was even more of a hit with my kids!

The book we picked for this month’s book club activity was How to Catch A Star by Oliver Jeffers.
This cute little story is all about a little boy that tries again and again to catch a star! My daughter and the daycare kids loved reading about all the ways he tried to catch the star. The illustrations are very well done and whimsical. I really enjoyed reading it with the kids!
Slime Recipe Ingredients:
- Glitter Glue (I made 2 batches, blue and purple)
- Borax
- Water
- Star Beads*
(* We received our Star beads free from CraftProjectIdeas.com but you can find their products at your local Walmart {worth it!} Check them out! )
Star Slime Directions:
- Empty the entire bottle of glitter glue into a mixing bowl.
- Fill the empty bottle with warm water, shake, & pour water into the mixing bowl with glue. Mix well.
- Measure 1/2 cup of warm water into a cup and add a teaspoon of Borax powder to the water. Stir until mostly dissolved.
- Slowly stir the Borax/water solution into the glue/water mixture, adding a little at a time. Keep adding and stirring until you get the consistency you are looking for. We only use about 3/4 of the borax solution because my kids like it kind of sticky and slimy. The more you add the firmer it gets.
The photo above is when my daughter was stretching it out in the kitchen (under the normal lights) but we mainly played with it on the light table:
The girls loved making their own “night sky” and catching stars like in the book! This was such a fun activity and my preschoolers had a great time with it!
Take a look back at the other activities we’ve made as part of this virtual book club! There have been Lions, Garbage Men, Pirates, & More! Plus below you will find over 30 more fun ideas for this month’s “Beyond Our Planet” theme!
