Twenty Yawns: A Children’s Book Review & Giveaway!
Have you heard of Twenty Yawns by Jane Smiley, illustrated by Lauren Castillo, yet? It’s an engaging story about a girl named Lucy, who after a busy day at the beach, is finding it hard to get to sleep.
“As her mom reads a bedtime story, Lucy drifts off. But later, she awakens in a dark, still room, and everything looks mysterious. How will she ever get back to sleep? This bedtime story evokes the splashy fun of the beach and the quietude of a moonlit night, with twenty yawns sprinkled in for children to discover and count.” Available: Hardcover | Kindle
Lucy and her family have a day full of fun and activity in the sun at the beach but when the sun starts to set they begin to yawn and soon it’s time for bed! The illustrations are beautifully done, the colors are bright and bold. My preschooler even said she wished she could have the sunset scene to hang on her wall because it was “so pretty & colorful.”
I love that the book starts off by shows the family enjoying a busy day together and then moves into the bedtime routine. It’s a great way to talk about things you do as a family and how your family winds down and transitions into a bedtime routine (which isn’t always easy to do after a busy day with a preschooler).
My daughter really connected with Lucy’s struggle to go to sleep and her need to have her friends nearby. She also has numerous bedtime friends that she snuggles with in bed and seeing Lucy search out her bedtime friends was a something she could related to.
Don’t forget to count the yawns! We usually read through it and then go back through to count all the yawns because the story itself is engaging and fun. We get caught up in in and forget to count so it works better for us to go through a second time to count the yawns.
There is also an activity kit that contains several fun activities related to the book you can download for free. The activity kit extends the opportunities for learning and connecting with your child over this story and it is an interactive way for kids to be part of a story they love! From critical thinking activities, to art, and letter tracing there’s sure to be something in this FREE activity kit that your child will love.

I highly recommend this book. It’s a sweet story with amazing images that is sure to set the mood for a peaceful bedtime with you child! My daycare kids like to read it before nap time and two even took it home a few times so they could read it with their parents at bedtime.
