Welcome to the March edition of the Poppins Book Nook! This month the theme is “Where In the World” and to go along with that we read a book about the outdoors and made some bird feeders!
For those of you not familiar with Poppins Book Nook, it’s a monthly virtual book club created by Enchanted Homeschooling Mom that features a new theme each month. There is a wide range of kid bloggers participating each month and featuring reviews of kid friendly books with crafts or activities that relate to the book or theme. You can find links to all the participating blogs and our upcoming themes below or at the Poppins Book Nook page.

For this month’s book club book we choose Into the Outdoors by Susan Gal. It’s a fun book for preschoolers that has great illustrations and an engaging story.
I didn’t look closely at this book when we grabbed it at the library so I wasn’t sure what to expect but I’m glad we picked it up. MB and the daycare girls were captivated by the illustrations and the text was simple but kept them engaged. It’s a simple book for toddlers and preschoolers that teaches spatial awareness and prepositions. The focus is on where things are in relation to others, like “We drove over the bridge” and “under the towering trees” plus many more as the story progresses. I definitely recommend you check it out, I know we will be revisiting it for camping season too!
Bird Feeders Craft:
As a fun activity for the girls to connect to the book we decided to go for a walk and see what things we could see and collect from our outdoor environment. On this trip the things that stood most out to the girls was all the birds that we were seeing on so they wanted to do an activity with the birds. What’s a better craft for birds than making bird feeders?
Materials for Bird Feeders Craft:
- Recycled Tin Can
- Acrylic Paint
- Hot Glue Gun
- Craft Sticks (we also used small slices of a tree branch Hubby had brought home from work)
- String
- Bird Seed
I cleaned up the recycled tin cans and set them, along with some acrylic paint, out on our outside art station. The girls picked what colors they wanted and painted away until they decided they had created bird feeders that the birds would think were “pretty.”
After they were dry we hot glued a craft stick (or tree slice) inside the cans, leaving about 1/4-1/3 of the stick protruding out of the can for the birds to land on. Next we tied some string around them and went looking for the perfect spot to hang them.
In keeping with the prepositions we were learning about in the book I asked the girls questions similar to those in the book as we did this project. Things like “are you putting that paint on the outside of the can?” or “Is your can next to MB’s?” and as we found spots to hang our bird feeders we talked about how it was “above” their heads but “below” the trees.
We ended up with three bird feeders that all had the same color scheme but different variations when it came to the ledge for the birds. We had one with no stick, one with a craft stick, and one with the tree slice for the ledge. I think they all turned out great and the girls created them just how they wanted them.
Now everyday when we begin our outdoor time the girls first want to grab their binoculars (we made these heart shaped ones from Happily Ever Mom) and go look for birds before they play.
