Are you ready for some Halloween light play activities? This month our Light & Reflections Series is back and it’s all about Halloween! For this theme, I found some Halloween decorations at the craft store and we did some ABC learning on the light table! Halloween Letter Matching on the Light Table
This simple ABC learning game for kids took me less than 3 minutes to set up and the girls got quite a kick out of using ghosts to match letters. In addition to learning letters, we also did some name recognition activities with these.
Materials:
- Halloween Themed Gems (aka Table Scatter)
- Dry Erase Marker
- Light Table/Panel/Box
I grabbed a box of these ghosts in the Halloween decorations area at our local craft/fabric store (Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft, I’ve seen similar ones at other large chain craft stores) and used a dry erase marker to write out the alphabet on the light table and on the ghost gems.
I wrote the letters out in the center of our light table and spread the letter ghosts out over the light table and next to the light table so the girls could spread them out and visually scan all the letters to find what they were looking for.
If they struggled remembering what letter was what we simply started at the beginning and sang the ABC song together until we reached the letter they were less familiar with.
The daycare kids and my daughter didn’t follow the traditional ABC order when matching letters. They matched the letters starting with the ones they were most familiar with and ending with the ones they were less familiar with. We started our letter learning activities with more common letters and I don’t necessarily follow ABC order when teaching letters to the girls.
Later we also used these to practice spelling their names and name recognition.
