Book Review: Bone Soup by Alyssa Satin Capucilli
If you are looking for a fun new book to read with your preschoolers this Halloween then this book is or you! It’s a fun story with engaging text and bold illustrations. Plus there is a recipe at the end so you can make your own bone soup! So fun and tasty!
Bone Soup By Alyssa Satin Capucilli
One Halloween morning three witches are looking for a tasty treat and they find only a small bone in their cupboard. So they decide to go from door to door in their village to find just the right ingredients for their Bone Soup. No one in the village is convinced that soup can be made from a bone, until the littlest monster reveals just what the special ingredient should be.
The story of bone soup is a fun Halloween twist on the classic story Stone Soup. It details the adventures of three little witches who are hungry but have nothing to eat except a bone. Yet with the help of some spooky (and skeptical) villagers they are able to create a whole batch of bone soup that can be shared by all.
These little witches go door to door trying to concoct the perfect bone soup. Some of their spooky neighbors aren’t keen on sharing their own food but the witches convince them that the end result will be worth it and that they can all share! My kids really got a kick out of all the silly and spooky items added to the soup. Lizards tails and old toe nails? Gross!
The illustrations are adorable! Perfectly drawn Halloween creatures and the background images really set the scene. The way the illustrator, Tom Knight, uses color in background and creates the characters really brings the story to life. It fits a spooky (but not too scary) Halloween story perfectly!
To us the moral of the story was sharing with those less fortunate, working together, and being patient. The little witches would have gone hungry if their neighbors hadn’t shared a small item or two with them. They had to work together to make the soup. All those neighbors had to learn to be patient and wait for the soup to be ready.
It’s really a fun Halloween book for preschoolers with a super great message.
Author Alyssa Satin Capucilli also has a fun activity kid that goes along with this activity. Find your witch name, color your own bone soup, get talking with discussion questions, and so much more!! Click the image below to get your free activity kit.
I highly recommend that you add this to your Halloween book collection for preschoolers! Your kids will really get a kick out of all the spooky characters and gross ingredients! They will even want to cook up their own batch of bone soup!
