Looking for some festive Christmas books for toddlers?
Now that Thanksgiving is over it’s officially time to dig out our Christmas books and raid the library’s holiday selection. The holiday books at our library disappear very quickly so I usually ‘cheat’ a bit and request all the books I want before Thanksgiving and then pick them up after the Thanksgiving holiday.
This is our list of our favorites from our collection of Christmas books for toddlers.

10 Adorable Christmas Books for Toddlers
(in no particular order)
Dream Snow by Eric Carle – “It’s December 24th, and the old farmer settles down for a winter’s nap, wondering how Christmas can come when there is no snow! But when the farmer awakens, he finds that it has really snowed outside, and now he remembers something!” Like all Eric Carle books my toddlers love to read this story! It’s a simple text and colorful illustrations are perfect for little ones! This book is a top favorite this year and the sound button at the back gets pushed over and over (and over and over…) but still is going strong.
Bear Stays Up for Christmas by Karma Wilson – “Bear’s friends are determined to keep Bear awake for Christmas! So they wake Bear up and have him help them find a Christmas tree, bake cakes, hang up stockings, and sing Christmas songs.” We love the Bear series from Karma Wilson! The books are all so sweet and the kids can relate to the stories. They love to see the friendship between Bear and his friends and get to celebrate Christmas with Bear.
Little Blue Truck’s Christmas by Alice Schertle – This book twinkles! What kid doesn’t love looking at Christmas lights? Your toddlers will love this adorable little story. “It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Little Blue Truck is spreading cheer by delivering Christmas trees to his animal friends. Can you help count each green tree from one to five and back again? Don’t forget to save one for Blue! Beep! Beep!”
Fa La La by Leslie Patricelli– “It’s almost Christmas, and baby simply cannot contain the exuberance. There are very creative presents to make, Santa to see (must be brave), carols to sing, not to mention the big event itself.” The girls love any of Leslie Particelli’s books, this one is no exception. I like that these books are simple but still keep the toddlers entertained and interested. My daughter is struggling with a fear of Santa this year and the pages about being brave for Santa spoke to her (although we will be passing on the lap sit this year).
Duck & Goose, It’s Time for Christmas! by Tad Hills– “Our feathered friends are getting ready for Christmas. The only problem? Goose is more interested in skating, sledding, and making snow angels than in helping Duck decorate their Christmas tree. While Goose has the time of his life in the snow, it seems poor Duck will be left to do all the work.” Another great simple yet entertaining book for toddlers from an author we love. One of the things that I like about this book is the bright colors and easy storyline. To me it’s not an overpowering Christmas book, it’s simple for young children.
The Itsy Bitsy Reindeer by Jeffrey Burton – “The itsy bitsy reindeer spreads holiday cheer as he helps Santa’s Workshop get ready for Christmas. Little ones will love this fresh holiday spin on the classic nursery rhyme, “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”!” A fun Christmas twist on a classic. I love the illustration in this book. My daughter loves the story and we read it over and over again.
Tractor Mac Saves Christmas by Billy Steers– “The snow builds and so does the worry on Stony Meadow Farm. Where are Sibley the Workhorse, Farmer Bill, and the town Christmas Tree? There will be no town tree lighting unless Tractor Mac can brave the blizzard, rescue his friends, and help a lot of new friends along the way.” Seriously what kid doesn’t love tractors? It’s always a hit!
Snowmen at Christmas by Caralyn Buehner – “This snappy and entertaining companion to the New York Times bestseller Snowmen at Night depicts all the best parts of the holiday, replete with icy treats and a snowman Kris Kringle. Told in the same bouncy verse as the original, Snowmen at Christmas is perfect for a snowy evening read-aloud.” This is one of my FAVORITES for toddlers! I really love the imagery and the kids love the story. It’s fun for them to see inside the life of a snowman!
Merry Christmas, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff– “Join Mouse from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie as he decorates his Christmas tree in a holiday counting adventure.” Mouse is one of our favorite characters! This is a cute story following Mouse as he decorates his Christmas tree.
Frosty the Snowman– “Everyone’s favorite snowman with a magic hat, a button nose, and eyes made out of coal comes to life on Christmas every year. Based on the beloved 1969 television special, this Little Golden Book retells the whole magical story of Frosty the Snowman.” Classic Frosty! No holiday collection is complete without the story of Frosty!
Llama Llama Jingle Bells by Anna Dewdney– “In Llama Llama Jingle Bells, little llama and his friends give gifts, sing songs, and decorate cookies. It’s a very merry holiday indeed!” What toddler doesn’t love the Llama Llama series? If you love the little Llama and all his friends you will want to pick up this Christmas version. It’s fun and cute!
Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett- “The charming tale of Matti’s clever trap for the runaway Gingerbread Baby is available as a beautiful board book for younger readers. And it still features a surprise lift-the-flap gingerbread house at the end!” A very cute spin on the Gingerbread Man! The girls are obsessed with babies and this gingerbread baby running around gets them giggling!
Dear Santa by Rob Campbell– “In this delightful tale, Santa is looking for the perfect present to send to a special child. Lift the flaps to reveal a big kite, a bouncy ball, and a mask! But nothing seems quite right…until Christmas Eve when Santa finds the perfect gift to leave under the tree.” Toddlers love the lift the flap element in this book and its a great story that keeps them engaged!
