Duck and Hippo Give Thanks by Jonathan London
It’s the day before Thanksgiving, and Hippo has his heart set on having a good old-fashioned feast with Duck and their friends. Together, Duck and Hippo go shopping for food and invite Turtle, Elephant, and Pig to share the special day with them. Then they get everything ready. But while Hippo goes to bed dreaming of his good old-fashioned Thanksgiving, Duck is busy making her own plans. There’s going to be a BIG surprise—one that will remind Hippo of all he has to be thankful for. Join Duck and Hippo for a memorable celebration!
Duck and Hippo Give Thanks was a really great book to read with preschoolers and kindergarteners! It’s perfect for Thanksgiving but it also teaches kids about tolerance and doing things that are not standard. Plus there are some pretty funny moments that my kids loved!
The story follows Duck and Hippo as they collect the perfect ingredients for Hippo’s perfect old fashioned Thanksgiving celebration. They go on quite the adventure to get all the ingredients that Hippo needs. From store to store they go, gathering supplies and inviting friends they meet along the way.
Every interaction they have with other friends they meet is an opportunity to talk with kids about manners and treating others politely. From helping others (like getting Hippo unstuck from a too small shopping cart) to taking turns and even saying “please” and “thank you” there are many opportunities to open conversations about how we treat others.
Hippo works fo hard to create his perfect old fashioned Thanksgiving. When all his friends arrive they have each brought something to share with Hippo and show their gratitude for all his hard work. At first Hippo is not sure about this, none of the things that they have brought are part of an old fashioned Thanksgiving. What should he do?
Thankfully, Hippo knows just what to do! He welcomes all his friends and celebrates them for who they are! Such a great message for young children!
Add this book to your preschool library today! It’s so worth it!
