With Halloween just around the corner, it’s time for some simple Halloween light table sorting activities!
Sometimes is fun to just grab a bunch of random items and let the kids use them as they see fit on the light table. For Halloween, we’ve been busy playing with spiders, skeletons, bats, and pumpkins on the light table. Most of the Halloween light table items that we have been using and that you see below are found in the Halloween party favors section at our local Wal-Mart. They come in multi-packs for under $1. Totally budget-friendly!
Halloween Light Table Color Sorting & Counting
We’ve been using this a lot lately and we keep them stored in a basket next to the light table with our light table loose parts. The spiders were originally spider rings but I just cut the ring portion off with scissors. We also used the spiders and skeletons in our Halloween sensory bin!
My daughter and the daycare girls did all kinds of sorting and got lots of fine motor work out of this activity! They sorted them out by color first and then sorted the spiders from the skeletons and sorted each set by color.
I also set up simple patterns for the girls to continue adding on to. Afterward, they began making their own patterns.

We started with simple patterns using just two colors. After awhile we slowly began adding more colors and made the patterns a bit more complex. The kids sorted them by color and then began adding the groups together! Such a fun way to practice beginning math!
In addition to pattern making and color sorting the girls love to pretend play with the skeletons and spiders. They had all kinds of stories going on from skeletons “waiting in line to go on a horse ride” to “camping spider parties!” Lots of open-ended play!
