It’s Show and Tell, Dexter! Book Review
We’ve loved reading the Dexter T. Rexter books! Dexter speaks to children in a way they can relate to and he is also super cute! This new book follows Dexter as he get’s ready for his first show and tell day.
Tomorrow is the biggest event ever in Dexter’s life: his best friend, Jack, is taking him to school for Show and Tell Day! Dexter has been getting ready for weeks. But now he’s a little nervous. What if the other kids don’t like him? So Dexter decides to come up with a plan. He’ll wear a costume. Dinosaurs in bunny ears look good, right? He’ll recite state capitals starting with…uh…ah…er. Then he realizes something. He can’t dance. He can’t recite things.
He doesn’t have ANY skills. What’s a dino to do?
The themes in the book are really helpful for children that are shy and children that worry about fitting in. The story is about Dexter as he worries about his first time in school at show and tell. He has been looking forward to it for weeks but as the day gets closer he gets more and more nervous about how it will go.
He hasn’t been to show and tell before so he doesn’t know what to expect. Each day it gets closer he feels even more worried that he won’t be liked as much as the other toys. That the kids will find all the toys interesting but won’t like him at all.
These feelings are definitely things that preschoolers struggle with when starting a new school or transitioning to kindergarten. Will they make friends or will they not fit in? What will happen on that first day? It’s a lot of unknowns which can be overwhelming to preschoolers.
Oh Dexter! He tries all kinds of different things to change who he is, to be something that he knows the kids will like. My daughter and the daycare kids got a kick out of all the silly outfits and ideas he had. They knew that Dexter was great just as he was.
Be yourself!
Through fun text and bold, colorful images the author shows kids that it is ok to be yourself. That you don’t need to be the smartest, the funniest, or even have a cute fluffy tail to fit in. You just need to be yourself because everyone is unique and has something special to share with thier friends.
I liked to talk about each of the different ideas Dexter had with my kids. We talked about how each thing was different and had both good and bad things. That everyone we meet will know how to do something we don’t and can teach us something new. And if we are being ourselves then we can share what makes us special and things we know with others.
I don’t think a preschool library is complete without this fun and sweet book! It’s Show and Tell Dexter is a delight ! Dexter is such a lovable lead character that both you and your kids will be hooked on the first page!
