10 Pirate Books for Kids!
Dirty Joe The Pirate by Bill Harley – My girls think this book is so funny! Dirty Joe is a story about a pirate who is after a very different kind of treasure: dirty socks! He and his crew sail the seas plundering ships for their dirty socks until he meets Stinky Annie and her band of girl pirates that are after their own odd treasure!
The Night Pirates by Peter Harris – A fun pre-bedtime pirate book we love to read! My daughter likes to stop and study the pictures on each page for a bit before we turn the page. Great illustrations. The story follows Tom as he takes off on a nighttime adventure with a band of girl pirates!
Small Saul by Ashley Spires – Fun book. The story follows Small Saul, an unconventional pirate, on his journey to get out to sea and become a real pirate. I like how this book teaches kids that you don’t have to change who you are to fit in. Little Saul tries to fit in with his pirate friends but he does it in his own way. The girls thought Small Saul was silly and got a kick out of his attempts to do pirate things.
Port Side Pirates By Oscar Seaworthy – Such a fun book! In this book, a group of pirates travel the seas and explore new places! I love that it’s a multicultural cast of characters and that the colors are so vibrant. This book is a little sing-a-long book but if you get yours from the library like we did, and it doesn’t have the CD you can hop over to YouTube and check out the song there. It’s worth it.
Pirates of the Sea by Brandon Dorman – Great illustrations! It’s a fun rhyming story and the girls all think the pirates are silly! We read this one several times a day! It’s a swashbuckling tale of some silly pirates!
Pajama Pirates by Andrew Kramer – The story of three young children who take a bedtime pirate adventure! My daughter loves this one and it’s a great pre-bedtime book for preschoolers. It’s rhyming text and great illustrations make for a great read!
I Love My Pirate Papa by Laura Leuck – Great illustrations and a fun story! The book tells the adventures of a little boy spending the day with his pirate dad. The rhyming text is fun and the story is sweet. Even rough tough pirates are fun and loving dads!
The Pirates Next Door by Jonny Duddle – This one is super cute. I love the illustrations and this one is a favorite of all the kids. Little Matilda lives in a quiet town until one day some new neighbors move to town, not just any old neighbors either! They’re pirates! It’s a cute story and we love to read it!
Pirate Pete by Kim Kennedy – We love Pirate Pete! There are a few other stories for kids featuring Pirate Pete but this one and the
Talk Like a Pirate ones are our favorites. They are fun stories that are engaging and have great illustrations!
There was an Old Pirate Who Swallowed a Fish by Jennifer Ward – A fun pirate version of “there Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” book. My daughter and the daycare girls love this one. It’s one of their top pirate books! This old Pirate eats all kinds of things, from coins to a whole pirate ship! The girls giggle along as his belly grows and he keeps eating more! Best of all unlike the little old lady books there is no mention of death or dying.
Bizzy Bear: A Pirate Adventure by Benji Davies – This one is more a toddler book but my daughter and the daycare girls have loved this book for so long I had to include it. It’s seriously one of the most checked out library books in our house and even though it’s a board book all the kids (18mo, 2.5 yrs, 3, & 4yrs) still enjoy reading it. Did we miss your favorite? Great selection of books…I would add Captain Crossbones in the Treasure Hunt which has a colorful story and a great message of love and self-esteem for children.
