Valentine’s Day Books for Kids
I’ve divided this list of Valentine’s Day books for kids into two groups: picture books and board books. Each list has the best books to read with your kids this time of year! Don’t see your favorite? Tell us about it in the comments so we can check it out!
Valentine’s Day Picture Books
Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day Is Cool by James Dean. “Pete thinks Valentine’s Day isn’t cool… until he realizes how many special cats there are in his life! He works hard to make valentines for everyone, and it turns out to be the grooviest Valentine’s Day ever.” We love Pete the Cat!
Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond. “One day it rains hearts, and Cornelia Augusta catches them. Each heart is special in its own way, and Cornelia Augusta knows exactly who to send them to.” This is one of my favorites, it has great illustrations and the story is simple for toddlers and preschoolers to easily follow along with.
Love Monster by Rachel Bright. “Love Monster is a slightly hairy monster trying to fit in with the cuddly residents of Cutesville. But as it turns out, it’s hard to fit in with the cute and the fluffy when you’re a googly-eyed monster.” Another one of my favorites! The illustrations are awesome, colorful and bright, and I love the theme that being different isn’t a bad thing.
The Perfect Hug by Joanna Walsh. “There are hugs for wrigglers, and hugs for gigglers. Hugs that are tickly, and hugs that are prickly…But what kind of hug is absolutely PERFECT? This fabulous feel-good picture book is simply bursting with the cuddliest, snuggliest, most perfect hugs.” Beautiful illustrations! A simple and cute book that my daughter and the girls LOVE! We seriously read it (and the one below) 4-5 times a day.
Plant a Kiss by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. “Little Miss planted a kiss! One small act of love blooms into something bigger and more dazzling than Little Miss could have ever imagined in this epic journey about life, kindness, and giving.”
Snowy Valentine by David Petersen. “Step out into a snowy Valentine’s Day with Jasper the bunny as he searches the forest valley for a special gift for his loved one.” Cute story that shows you can give more than just material gifts to tell someone you care about them.
The Biggest Kiss by Joanna Walsh. “From tiny ants to enormous elephants, there’s a kiss for everyone in this warm and cozy feel-good book. Find out if worms kiss underground, with the soil all around, or if fish kiss with a splash and a splish.” As with the book above this is a book with great illustrations that the girls love!
Valentine’s Day Board Books
Where Is Baby’s Valentine? A Lift-the-Flap Book by Karen Katz. “It’s a shiny, glittering delight as you lift the sturdy flaps to help Baby find her very special valentine.” What toddler doesn’t love lift the flap books?
Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff. “Mouse from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie as he celebrates Valentine’s Day with all the friends he loves.” Any adventures with Mouse are always a hit with my daughter and the daycare girls.
Duck & Goose, Goose Needs a Hug by Tad Hills. “What does Goose need more than anything this Valentine’s Day? A hug from a good friend.” We love the Duck and Goose series! This one is no exception. This isn’t your typical Valentine’s Day book but I like the message. It teaches kids that we need to listen to how others are feeling and what they need.
Huggy Kissy by Leslie Patricelli.“When you’re an adorable bald baby, your family finds lots of ways to show you how much they love you.” We love the simple text and bright illustrations in this book! It’s a simple read that the girls want to read over and over!
Counting Kisses: A Kiss & Read Book by Karen Katz. “How many kisses does a tired baby need? Count and kiss along with this bedtime book” A cute counting book for toddlers!
Snuggle Puppy by Sandra Boynton. “A great big hug in book form, Snuggle Puppy is a year-round valentine from parent to child.” A fun book to sing and read along with! We love Boynton books!
