We do a lot of open-ended toddler art activities, a lot that don’t usually make the blog because my daughter and the daycare kids have access to paint, markers, crayons, and other various art materials throughout the day. Occasionally we do a planned art activity but either way, art is a popular activity around here.

This is a simple toddler art activity that you can also do with preschoolers. You only need a few simple art supplies to do this open-ended art activity. My kids love to do this activity because they can create and design their art however they wanted.
Watercolor Resist Preschool & Toddler Art
What we used:
- Oil Pastels
- Liquid Watercolors
- Painters Tape
- Construction Paper
I started the project by putting two strips of tape on the paper then gave the kids the tape and she placed the strips where she wanted. When all the tape was down she picked out some oil pastels and started coloring.
After the oil pastels we got out our liquid watercolors and she painted over her picture and the tape with it.
When they fished painting it I used a paper towel to absorb some of the excess watercolors. Then it was time to pull off the tape.
My kids wanted to pull off the tape themselves so there aren’t any perfect straight lines but what toddler art project is perfect and tidy anyway?
Tada! A beautiful masterpiece for our art wall! I love the way the watercolors an oil pastels blend together.

What a fun idea! My daughter loves art projects and messy fun activities. Can’t wait to bust out the supplies and do this sometime soon. Thanks, Lisette!

I did this with my son’s class of 19 for a birthday craft project. I had only 15 minutes so I did the taping the night before and gave them a choice of just two watercolor washes. Went GREAT! THANKS!
