This DIY shape matching game for toddlers is one of our favorites!
Are your toddlers beginning to learn their shapes? My younger daycare children are starting to recognize and identify shapes. To encourage this interest I put together this very simple but engaging shape learning activity. This teaches toddlers to identify shapes and helps with their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
We’ve had these buttons shapes for quite a while, we used them for lacing and art activities. I got them at Wal-Mart in the craft/sewing section for around $4 I think. I recently checked and they do still sell them at our store (a smaller, non-superstore Wal-Mart) so I assume others may have them too.
DIY Shape Matching Game for Toddlers
You can make this simple shape matching game for toddlers in less than five minutes! It’s a super fun (and simple) way for toddlers to learn shapes!
Materials:
- Shape Buttons
- Index Cards
- Markers
All I did was trace the shapes onto index cards, label, and laminate. Done. Super easy! You don’t have to laminate them but my toddlers are not easy on things and I wanted this to last more than a few days. Plus I love my laminator so I will use any excuse to laminate something 😂
I like this activity because the colors are bright and it works fine motor skills as well as teaching shape recognition. The kids think its fun to match them and of course, dump them off the cards and back into to basket.
I like to use this activity in busy bags and as a quick “do beside me” activity to keep my toddlers busy while I’m getting a few emails answered or caught up on some cleanup. However, if you still have kids that like to put things in their mouth they should definitely have a close eye kept on them.
