With fall fast approaching and the recent change in our weather we’ve started focusing on more fall themes and fun hands-on fall activities. We always have a stack of fall books in the house and usually add even more to our stockpile after we hit our local library. This week we ended up with a stack of books about apples which inspired us to do some apple themed sensory play!

Because we are currently obsessed with apple themed books for fall I was inspired to incorporate apples and apple pie into our activities starting with this apple pie playdough!
Apple Pie Scented Playdough for Kids
Playdough is always a favorite activity in my home daycare so I knew my daughter and the daycare kids would really enjoy it! Especially if it smelled like apple pie!
Ingredients for apple pie playdough:
- 1 cup flour
- ¼ cup salt
- ½ Tbsp. vegetable oil
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp. cream of tartar
- ½ tsp. nutmeg
- ½ tsp allspice
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- Red food coloring
(or you can use apple pie seasoning which contains all of the above spices)
Instructions:
- In a large pot, combine all dry ingredients and mix well.
- Add in vegetable oil, food coloring, and water, stir.
- Cook over medium heat until the dough pulls away from pot and starts to become dry.
- Remove from heat, let cool, and knead. (If dough feels too sticky, knead in a Tbsp of flour)
- Play!
When our apple pie playdough was cooled it was time to play! I gave the kids small pie tins trays, an apple shaped cookie cutter, and playdough rolling pin.
Below are the books that we read that inspired this apple pie playdough!
- Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell
- The Apple Tree by Zoe Hall
- Apple Pie ABC by Alison Murray
- Amelia Bedelia’s First Apple Pie by Herman Parish

Scented play dough is always a treat for the class. Thank you for sharing the recipe. If anyone is making this to use in a larger group setting, take note of allergies, as nutmeg can trigger reactions in those with tree nut allergies.
