April Preschool Themes
April is a fun moth for kid’s activities. Below are some of our most favorite preschool themes to do this time of year. Hope this helps you with your lesson planning!
And don’t be thrown off by the “preschool” term. These themes and activities will work great for toddlers too!
WEATHER
April showers mean lots of time to study the weather! We love to do our weather unit this time of year. Learn about the different types of clouds, why it rains, and what makes rainbows. I enjoy doing weather-related science activities with the kids, like rain jars, and they practice learning to count with sun rays and raindrops! There are so many ways you can learn and play with this fun theme for preschool!
See all the hands-on activities we have in our teacher-created weather lesson plan unit.
EARTH/ARBOR DAY
Both Earth Day and Arbor Day celebrations are near the end of April every year. This allows for a natural pairing of learning about the earth and recycling in your April preschool lesson plans. During this theme, we read books about trees, go on a nature walk, and learn about recycling through sensory play. We do crafts that help the kids learn about the layers of our Earth and we explore flowers through art! There are so many ways to learn and play with this theme! It’s one of my favorites.
COLORS & RAINBOWS
Nothing says spring like bright colors and beautiful rainbows! Learn about colors by sorting objects or make color word collages. Turn your windows into a colorful garden by creating rainbow suncatchers and doing layered flower crafts. Color units are classic preschool themes and have so many fun ways to play and learn!
EASTER
The Easter holiday can fall in March or April depending on the year. If Easter lands in April this year then you should definitely add Easter-themed activities to your lesson plans this month. It’s a fun preschool theme to use this time of year that lets kids explore eggs, bunnies, chicks, or religious teachings. I generally keep things secular in my daycare so we focus on the sping elements in Easter. We learn to count with plastic eggs, practice color recognition by sorting toy chicks, or even do some gross motor activities by hopping like a bunny.
ANIMALS
Spring is when all those little animals and creatures are venturing out more. Kids can observe animals scurrying around at local parks and birds returning home after winter migration. We love to study animals around this time. We learn about their habitats and eating habits through sensory play and small world activities. Kids can practice literacy skills by sorting animals by letter sounds or creating stories with animal story stones!
BOOKS & LIBRARY
The National Libray week is usually in early April. I like to celebrate this with my daycare kids and we have many fun activities. We learn about parts of a book, how books are made, what librarians do, and even set up a pretend play library in our playroom. It’s lots of hands-on learning and reading!
FARM
Farm themed activities are perfect for this time of year because it’s a natural time to start talking about seeds and sprouts. We usually combine farming and gardening into one fun farm unit. You can teach children how to plant seeds and how seeds grow. Turn your playroom into a farm store or create a simple farm small world.
FROGS AND PONDS
Did you know that April is National Frog Month? It’s the perfect time to learn about frogs and pond life! Go explore a pond near your house or create a frog life cycle with craft supplies. We practicing hopping like a frog for some gross motor activity and building ponds in the backyard with natural materials from our yard. Kids love learning about frogs so I highly recommend this as an April preschool theme!
AROUND THE WORLD
I like to follow our farm and gardening unit will this around the world preschool theme. After we finish explore things that grow around us we begin talking about what life in other parts of the world is like. Children love to learn about other cultures and different environments. We explore other cultures and landscapes with sensory play, art, and reading!
