If you have a light table at home then you know it’s perfect for fine motor activities! We love doing simple fine motor activities on the light table and since it’s Christmastime I set out this festive Christmas activity for the kids. It’s quick to pull together and keeps the kids engaged for a good chunk of time. It’s also a great quiet time activity for after nap or in the evenings!

Christmas Light Table Activity with Loose Parts
Fine motor activities are important for developing the skills necessary for writing. They improve muscles in the fingers and hands, strengthen handgrip, and develop wrist movement which are all skills needed for writing.
Materials:
- Glass Gems (green/brown are from the Dollar Tree)
- Mosaic Tiles (ours are from Micheals Craft Store)
- Glass Gem Stars (or beads! We got outs in a moon/stars pack at Micheals)
- Light Table
- Tree & Wreath Template (<— Click to download ours for free)
I made our wreath template and got the tree from a free clip art website. The tree was a bit hard to see on the light table so I outlined it with a black marker to make it stand out a bit more. You can download our templates above or if you have artistic skills (which I don’t) you could always draw these out too.
The square tiles made perfect presents to go under our tree and the other gems really made our trees come to life! The smooth texture and small size of the gems require little ones to get those fingers working!

We also made Christmas wreaths with green and brown glass gems!
Fun and easy right?! My kiddos enjoyed this and we’ve been playing with it all week! I usually put it out after nap time so that my early risers have a quiet play activity while the other kids sleep.
