Sample Home Daycare Lunch Menus (Free 12-Week Meal Plan)
When I first started my home daycare, I was gung-ho about meal prep. I actually liked planning my meals months in advance. But over time I got burnt out on all the cooking and menu planning. I ended up just cycling through the same meals over and over, stuck in a rut. I decided to take a step back and put together some daycare lunch menus, and it was a game-changer!
Why Use a Daycare Lunch Menu?
Having a planned menu offers several benefits for both providers and families.
A weekly or monthly lunch menu helps you:
- Save time planning meals
- Reduce grocery shopping trips
- Stay organized
- Serve a variety of healthy foods
- Avoid repeating the same meals every week
- Share your menu with parents in advance
When your meals are planned ahead of time, it also becomes much easier to shop sales, buy in bulk, and prepare ingredients before the week begins.
Sample Home Daycare Lunch Ideas
Need a little inspiration? Here are a few examples of lunches that were favorites in my home daycare.
- Baked chicken, brown rice, broccoli, and peaches
- Turkey sandwiches, cucumber slices, apple slices, and milk
- Homemade macaroni and cheese with green beans and pears
- Mini pizzas, carrots with ranch dip, and oranges
- Grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup and mixed fruit
- Spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, and garlic bread
- Chicken quesadillas with corn and fresh strawberries
- Beef tacos with lettuce, tomatoes, and melon
- Pasta salad with turkey and mixed vegetables
- Breakfast for lunch with scrambled eggs, toast, fruit, and yogurt
Remember that every daycare is different, so adjust your menu based on children’s allergies, dietary needs, and your local food program requirements.
My Best Meal Planning Tips
After years of operating a home daycare, I learned a few tricks that made meal planning much easier.
Plan Several Weeks at Once
Instead of creating a new menu every Sunday, I planned multiple weeks at a time. Once I had a rotation I liked, I reused it throughout the year with seasonal adjustments.
Prep Ingredients Ahead
Wash fruits, chop vegetables, and cook proteins ahead of time whenever possible. Even 30 minutes of prep on the weekend can save hours during a busy week.
Rotate Favorites
Children often enjoy familiar foods. Rotating favorite meals every few weeks keeps your menu predictable without becoming boring.
Keep Meals Simple
Lunch doesn’t have to be elaborate. Balanced, nutritious meals with familiar ingredients are often the biggest hit with young children.
Keep Records for Taxes
Any time you are doing daycare-related work and don’t have children present, like meal prepping on a weekend or evening, you should track how long you spend working. You can add that time spent to your end-of-year hours worked to calculate your time/space percentage. This can save you money at tax time! Also, even if you are not on the food program, don’t forget to track all the meals and snacks you serve to children. You can write this off on your daycare taxes!
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I serve for daycare lunch?
A balanced daycare lunch typically includes a protein, grain, fruit, vegetable, and milk (if required by your food program). Offering a variety of foods throughout the week helps children develop healthy eating habits.
How far in advance should I plan daycare meals?
Many providers find that planning four to twelve weeks of meals at a time reduces stress and makes grocery shopping much easier.
Can I customize these menus?
Absolutely! Think of these menus as a starting point. Swap ingredients based on seasonal produce, family preferences, sales, food allergies, or dietary restrictions.
Are These Menus Food Program Friendly?
Many of these meals were planned with the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) in mind. Depending on your state or sponsoring organization, you may need to make small adjustments to ensure your meals meet current meal pattern requirements.
Always check with your local food program for the most up-to-date guidelines.
