March Preschool Themes
There are all kinds of fun themes you can do with preschoolers this time of year. This is the transition out of winter and into spring and spring holidays, there’s so many things that fit into that theme!
Below are my favorite March preschool themes to do with the kids in my home daycare. This list is filled with my personal favorite themes for March, what are yours? Share them in the comments!
And don’t be put off by the “preschooler” term, many of these will work just as well for your toddlers too!
In no particular order, here are some of our favorite preschool lesson plan themes for this month:
Dr. Seuss
Read Across America and Dr. Suess’s birthday are on March 2nd, which makes it a perfect March preschool theme. You can plan a week of fun activities centered around these beloved books. We learn to read with One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish and make our own Cat in the Hat hats from paper.
Spring
One of my favorite March preschool themes is spring! There is so much to do when it comes to spring activities! Build flowers with playdough, create rainbow suncatchers for your windows, learn ABCs petals or raindrops! There are so many fun hands-on ideas you can plan with a spring theme.
Our spring-themed preschool lesson plans are always a hit with my daycare kids. You can check them out in our store.
St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day can be a fun time to celebrate rainbows, clouds, gold, and have fun with leprechauns. We use rainbows to learn about colors and have fun making leprechaun traps and shamrock crafts. Gold coins can be used for counting and math games. The great thing about holiday-themed learning activities is that you can find many neat party favors in dollar stores or party sections of big stores for cheap. These party favors make great manipulatives for math and sensory play!
Bugs & Butterflies
This is a preschool unit that kids always love. Butterflies and bugs always capture the attention of children. From how they move to what they eat and where they live there are so many fun activities you can do with this theme. We love to make butterflies from beads and even pasta. We use caterpillars and ladybugs to learn math and spelling. There are so many fun ways to learn and play with this easy March preschool theme!
Our Bugs and Butterflies lesson plans are sure to please! Teacher-created and kid-approved!
Easter
Sometimes Easter falls in March or even early April. Either way, it’s a fun preschool theme to use this time of year that lets kids explore eggs, bunnies, and chicks. You can learn to count with plastic eggs, practice color recognition by sorting toy chicks, or even do some gross motor activities by hopping like a bunny.
Flowers and Trees
This is the time of year when flowers and trees begin to come to life. Signs of spring can be found all over your yard and local parks. Studying the flowers and trees around you is a natural theme for this time of year with kids. They see trees beginning to grow leaves or flowers starting to sprout and they want to know the how and why.
This flowers and trees themed unit is packed with hands-on learning and printables!
Vincent Van Gogh
The famous artist, Vincent Van Gogh, was born in March. This makes March a perfect time to introduce children to his works and that of other artists. We love to get books from the library and look through them. We look at the texture of his work and talk about what we see in his artwork. The kids do their own art, recreating their own versions of his famous artwork.
Transportation
Cars, trucks, and things that fly! Transportation is always a kid-approved favorite! Count with wheels, graph different types of vehicles, and paint with trains. One thing I really like about this theme is that cars and trucks seem to be a staple in preschool classrooms and homes. Most people have cars on hand so all you have to do to set up a few transportation themed activities is dig them out!
March Activity Calendar
Looking for a mix of all these? Our free March activity calendar is packed full of our favorite activities from many of the March preschool themes above! It has 31 activities for you to do at home or in your preschool, that’s one activity of craft for each day of the month. Plus it’s a free activity calendar!
